Daily ventilation and smoke exhaust: what is the difference?
In this guide — jump to a section
Daily ventilation
Depending on the configuration, domes can open manually, electrically or pneumatically. For powered dome ventilation, the catalogue lists AC 230 V/50 Hz or DC 24 V supplies. An optional wind and rain sensor enables automatic closing in bad weather. This describes the ventilation function; it is not proof of suitability for fire-safety use.
Smoke exhaust is part of a designed fire-safety solution
Natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilation requires a dedicated, documented configuration. Device suitability, performance, layout, controls and integration with other systems must follow the project’s fire-safety design and applicable local requirements. The Slovenian source guide also refers to TSG-1-001, which addresses smoke and heat exhaust separately; it is not a substitute for the requirements in your country.
What does the POS plastika catalogue specify?
- NODT II domes: pneumatic CO₂ or electric 24 V versions; illustrated configurations open to 140°.
- STELUX for smoke exhaust: dedicated 24 V or 48 V drives, with listed angles of 90°, 105° or 140°.
- Continuous rooflights and double-flap vents: ventilation or smoke-exhaust options according to the selected configuration.
The catalogue refers to EN 12101-2 for smoke-exhaust devices. These options do not apply universally to every size. Check the documentation and declared performance of the selected device.
Can an existing ventilator be converted to a smoke vent?
This cannot be confirmed from motor voltage or opening angle alone. The device, documentation and project requirements need assessment. Changing a motor, controller or other component can alter system performance; leave modifications to qualified specialists.
Inspection and maintenance
Use the instructions for the specific system and appropriate professional support. The POS plastika catalogue lists inspection, maintenance, refurbishment and servicing of smoke and heat exhaust mechanisms. Include identification details, documentation and a description of the problem with your enquiry, where available.
Important: this guide explains the two functions. It does not replace fire-safety design, sizing calculations, or installation and service instructions.
