Dome rooflight or STELUX glass rooflight?

In this guide — jump to a section

When is a dome rooflight worth considering?

Dome rooflights are made from acrylic or polycarbonate. The range includes round, square and rectangular shapes with different layer build-ups. Clear and opal versions offer different light transmission. Where impact resistance is important, consider the polycarbonate configuration; for thermal requirements, compare multi-layer or TOPtermo versions.

What does STELUX offer?

STELUX is a flat-roof window with a reinforced welded PVC frame, a double seal and insulating glass. The catalogue specifies laminated VSG glass on the inside and toughened glass on the outside. Rectangular and round versions are available, with options for solar-control or acoustic glazing and an external screen blind.

How can thermal figures be compared fairly?

The standard STELUX glazing has Ug = 1.1 W/m²K, visible light transmission of 80%, a g-value of 0.7 and Rw = 33 dB. These are glazing figures, not those of the complete installed window. For a dome, also check which component and build-up each figure describes. Comparing two Ug values alone does not show every property of the finished roof solution.

Opening must be specified

Both ranges offer solutions for different uses, but the opening function must be selected when ordering. Daily ventilation, roof access, and natural smoke and heat exhaust have different requirements. A fall-through resistance test does not mean that the element is designed to be walked on.

What should you send for a comparison quotation?

  • The same opening dimensions and number of elements for both options.
  • Room use, heating requirements and roof build-up.
  • Required opening, shading and acoustic performance.
  • Whether the quotation should include the upstand, installation and removal of the existing element.

Compare quotations with the same scope. Without these details, there is no universally better or cheaper choice.
